Guest Mode

For Fleet accounts

Guest Mode is designed to simplify vehicle access management for fleet and rental managers. It restricts vehicle access, enables drivers to set up limited Tesla mobile app access using a key card and QR code, and facilitates easy data erasure once the guest has completed their usage.

Real-world usage example

  1. Without any phone key connected, tap the key card on the driver-side pillar to unlock the vehicle
  2. The guest scans the QR code displayed on the vehicle's touchscreen
  3. The guest will be directed to this webpage to gain limited mobile access to the vehicle (see Guest Mode remote access below)
  4. The guest can now unlock, monitor and control the vehicle through the app, all while ensuring the vehicle remains protected (see Guest Mode restrictions below)
  5. When the guest is finished, simply select Erase User Data to remove their information and reset access

Enable Guest Mode

On your Fleet Dashboard, click the shield icon under Guest Mode next to each vehicle.

Know the status of Guest Mode

If Direct Telemetry is enabled on the vehicle, the Guest Mode status will be shown as On or Off.

If the status is shown as Unknown, you can verify if Guest Mode is enabled by attempting to add or delete a key from within the vehicle.

Guest Mode remote access

If a user unlocks a vehicle or authenticates it for driving while in Guest Mode, they will receive a prompt to set up a phone key by scanning a QR code on the touchscreen.

This gives them limited access to:

  • View the vehicle's live location
  • Issue remote commands
  • Download their Tesla account profile to the vehicle
  • Set up their phone as a key

Guest access excludes certain driver access features, such as Service and Roadside.

Guest Mode restrictions

Additionally, Guest Mode protects the integrity of the vehicle by preventing guest users from:

  • Changing keys
  • Changing the vehicle name
  • Changing PIN to Drive
  • Changing Speed Limit Mode
  • Changing the Glovebox PIN
  • Formatting the dash cam USB drive

Erase user data

To protect the sensitive information of drivers, you can remotely erase user data stored in the vehicle.

On your Fleet Dashboard, click the shield icon to the right of the vehicle then click Erase User Data.

Warning: This erases all profiles and user data, so exercise caution.

Cloud synced profiles are typically restored automatically within a few minutes. To restore the profiles immediately, restart the vehicle.

How Guest Mode works

  • If a user unlocks a vehicle or authenticates it for driving while in Guest Mode, they will receive a prompt to set up a phone key by scanning a QR code on the touchscreen
    • Requires vehicle firmware 2024.14+
    • Requires the vehicle to be online
    • Does not show a QR code if a phone key is already connected
    • Revokes any existing guest access if a QR code is shown
  • Only one guest is allowed access at a time
  • If a user does not have the app installed, they will see this webpage to guide them through the process

Guest access is automatically removed when:

  • A key card is used to drive the vehicle
  • A new QR code is scanned (only one guest is allowed at a time)
  • Guest Mode is disabled
  • Vehicle ownership is transferred
